The Siecor OptiTest local test set overcomes the problems of both fiber end face access and the inability to measure existing splices. The OptiTest local test set offers an accurate measurement of local attenuation of any existing splice using a bi-directional transmission and receiving system. The OptiTest unit eliminates the effect of coupling efficiencies by use of a symmetrical receiver.

Transmitters launch light into the fiber on both sides of the test object being measured. This light is detected by use of a symmetrical receiver which is located between the two transmitters. This symmetrical receiver provides power ratio measurements by simultaneous detection of the signals from both transmitters. The power ratios the then used by the units microprocessor to calculate the attenuation.
